Alpha lipoic acid is a sulphur containing fatty acid found inside each and every body cell. Lipoic acid has a key role in the metabolism as it helps to convert glucose into cellular energy.

Alpha lipoic acid is a potent antioxidant which functions both in water and fat. It is also thought to help recycle other antioxidants such as Vitamin C and vitamin E. Because lipoic acid is fat soluble, it can help prevent free-radical damage from occurring inside nerve cells. It can help our body to protect against diseases caused by oxidative damage- for example, cancer and cardiovascular disease.

It has also been shown to enhance glucose uptake in non-insulin dependent diabetes and inhibit glycosylation. It is also said to have anti-obesity properties. In some researches, it has also shown to improve vision in patients with glaucoma.

The usual dose recommended for antioxidant purposes is 20-50 mg per day. However, doses between 300 and 600 mg can be given to treat diabetic neuropathies. It has shown no significant side-effects at daily doses up to 1,800 mg but pregnant women must consult their doctor before taking alpha lipoic acid.
