Looking at Bill Pearl today it is difficult to believe that he actually retired from competitive bodybuilding almost thirty years ago. A four time Mr. Universe, at age seventy-two he is still in the fabulous shape he was in during his competitive years, and his training schedule is definitely not that of a weary old man.
Since age ten, Pearl has worked out four to five times every week. That’s sixty two years of exercise-and proof that weight training has some serious implications for extending human life, both in years and quality oh health.
Currently living on a farm in Oregon, Pearl still religiously continues to body build. Following the advice of the old adage, “Early to bed, early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise,” Pearl credits his good shape to his sleep schedule. Being in bed by 8:00 pm each night allows Pearl the freedom to do what he loves most: train hard and train early. He’ll wake at 2:30 in the morning and start his workout with thirty to forty-five minutes on the stationary bike, stair climber or rower. Then he proceeds to weight train from about 4:15 until 6:00. One hundred and twenty minutes of serious training, four to five times per week, is a workout not many twenty-five-year olds can keep up with.
Pearl’s philosophy is one for which we all should strive. Several years ago he stated, “At sixty five, my goal is to have a productive lifestyle. I want to put in seventeen to eighteen waking hours, all of which are productive.”
