Can DHEA (adrenal hormone) help in the treatment of lupus?

Systemic lupus erythematosus is a chronic inflammatory disease in which a defective immune system causes abnormalities in the blood vessels and connective tissues, as well as damaging the kidneys, nervous system, joints, and skin. The usual treatment for lupus-steroids and chemotherapy- is often more painful and debilitating than the disease itself.
Now, scientists are wondering whether DHEA might be a safer and more effective treatment for lupus. DHEA is the most abundant steroid in the human body and is involved in the manufacture of testosterone, estrogen, progesterone, and corticosterone. The decline of DHEA with age parallels that of HGH.
Dr. James McGuire, chief of staff at Stanford University Hospital, and Dr. Ronald van Vollenhoven, assistant professor of immunology and rheumatology at Stanford, administered 50 to 200 mg of oral DHEA to fifty-seven women with Lupus. Over the three to twelve months that the study lasted, some two-thirds of the patients reported that their symptoms had been relieved, at least to some extent; their skin rashes were less sever and less frequent and they suffered less from joint pain, headaches and fatigue. Many also reported a higher tolerance for exercise and better concentration.
