Changes in sleep with age
Anti aging, Guide, HgH, News, Review, Tips
A person’s need for sleep does not change or decline with age. Researchers have shown that sleep needs remain constant throughout adulthood. However, middle-aged and older people tend to spend less time in deeper sleep than younger people do. By age sixty or seventy, the period of delta sleep is much shorter. Across all ages, the percentage of REM sleep remains largely constant.
A number of factors commonly associated with aging may interrupt, delay, or shorten sleep. As we age, nighttime sleep is likely to be disturbed for a number of reasons:
* Lifestyle changes
* Decreased secretion of melatonin
* Changes in body temperature cycle
* Decrease in exposure to natural light
* Dietary changes
* Decreased mental stimulation during daytime
* Aches and pains
* Diseases and/or medications to treat them may disrupt sleep
* Hot flashes in menopausal women
* Psychological changes or conditions including depression and anxiety
* Frequent waking at night to go to the bathroom
* Accentuated sensitivity to light or sound
* Stress or bereavement
