According to medical researches, about 40 per cent of the population is deficient in thyroid hormone in some way. Most hypothyroidism isn’t clear-cut on standard medical tests, but there is a simple way to find out if you have this condition. Take the Barnes Basal Temperature Teat by following these steps:

    1. Before you go to bed at night, shake down an oral or under-the-arm thermometer and leave it by your bed.

    2. As soon as you awaken the next day, place the thermometer in your armpit and leave it there for ten minutes before getting up.

    3. Record the temperature. A normal temperature for under the armpit will be 97.8 or 98.2 degrees Fahrenheit. If your temperature is lower than that for two consecutive days, you are very likely suffering from a degree of hypothyroidism.

Another test that does a particularly good job of detecting any malfunction is a new, highly sensitive thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) assay. TSH is an excellent indicator of thyroid hormone action at the tissue level, and many doctors believe that these TSH assays will provide the best indication of hypothyroidism.
