As we have seen, aging usually brings with it a shift in the body composition. The older we become, the greater is the proportion of fat in our bodies. Older people tend to gain weight, others lose muscle mass and gain fat, even if their aggregate weight remains the same.
Many hormones have the effect of restoring muscle mass and reducing fat, and DHEA is no exception. It seems to behave similarly to thyroid hormone in regard to weight loss, by indirectly enhancing thermogenesis, or fat burning, and energy production at the cellular level.
Various studies have shown low levels of DHEA to be associated with obesity. Many researchers believe that DHEA’s antiobesity effects are due to its ability to block a specific enzyme called glucose-6-phosphate-dehydrogenase (G6PD). Scientists believe that by inhibiting G6PD, DHEA actually blocks the body’s ability to store and produce fat. Some researchers hypothesize that DHEA’s effect on fat loss and increased mass may be due in part to its ability to help expend energy, rather than store it for future use.
In a year long study of fifteen people conducted at the University of California at San Diago, endocrinologist Dr. Yen discovered that DHEA increased muscle mass in men and women, and men gained strength and lost fat.
