We are forever in search of the cure for old age. Dozens of theories have been proposed, yet science has not produced a universal theory of aging. Current theories of aging at the cellular and molecular level generally revolve around two themes- aging is programmed and aging is accidental. Let us have a look at some of the theories of aging:
1. Death Hormone theory- Unlike other cells, brain cells and neurons do not replicate. Dr. Donner Denckla, a former endocrinologist at Harvard University claimed that as we age, the pituitary begins to release DECO (Decreasing Oxygen Consumption Hormone) which inhibits the ability of cells to use thyroxine, a hormone produced by the thyroid that governs basal metabolism. The resulting changes in metabolic rate bring on and accelerate the process of aging.
2. Thymic-stimulating Theory- Studies of shown that thymic factors are helpful in restoring the immune systems of children born without thymus glands as well as rejuvenating the poorly functioning immune systems of the elderly. Thymic hormones may also play a role in stimulating and controlling the production of neurotransmitters and brain and endocrine system hormones, which means they may be the pacemakers of aging itself as well as key regulators responsible for immunity.
3. Mitochondrial theory- Mitochondria are the energy producing organelles in the cells that are responsible for producing ATP, our primary source of energy. They produce cell energy by a process that leads to the formation of potentially damaging free radicals. Mitochondria are also one of the easiest targets of free-radical injury because they lack most of the defenses found in other parts of the cell. New researches in mitochondrial repair could play an important part in the fight against aging.
4. Redundant DNA theory- Like some other theories, the redundant DNA theory blames errors accumulating in genes for age changes. This theory also blames reserve genetic sequences of identical DNA that take over until the system is worn out.
These are just a few of the theories proposed on aging. Generally scientists believe that aging is a mechanism installed in the human body to insure the continued survival of the species. As a result, many bodily functions begin to decline with ever-accelerated losses of function continuing in each succeeding decade.
