Genotropin is the brand name of Somatropin [rDNA origin] for injection. Genotropin comes in as a Lyophilized Powder. Genotropin is synthesized in a strain of Escherichia coli that has been modified by the addition of the gene for human growth hormone. Though man made, it is an exact copy of natural human growth hormone released by the body.
It is the only growth hormone in the U.S. which is FDA approved for treatment of growth failure in children born small for gestational age (SGA) and for growth failure due to Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS). Genotropin has been approved by the FDA for treatment in:
Children with growth hormone deficiency (GHD)
Children born small for gestational age (SGA)
Children with Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS)
Girls with Turner syndrome (TS)
Adults with growth hormone deficiency (aGHD)
More recently, Genotropin was approved for the treatment of pediatric patients with Prader-Willi Syndrome, a genetically based developmental disability.
In children suffering from GHD or PWS treatment with Genotropin stimulates linear growth and normalizes concentrations of IGF-I (Insulin-like Growth Factor/Somatomedin-C). In adults with GHD, treatment with Genotropin results in reduced fat mass, increased lean body mass, metabolic alterations that include beneficial changes in lipid metabolism, and normalization of IGF-I concentrations.
Like any other synthetic medication, Genotropin, in some cases, causes certain side effects which include Injection site reactions Headache , Edema (fluid retention), Aggressiveness, Arthralgia (joint pain), Myalgia (muscle pain) and hair loss. Again, the response of a chil to this therapy depends on certain factors like the child’s growth condition, child’s age, how close to puberty the child is, the child’s growth hormone level before therapy begins, Genetic factors, the dose of growth hormone prescribed by your child’s doctor and the length of time on treatment.
Again, Genotropin treatment is effective only until the bones stop growing. So, the sooner your child starts treatment, the better the results are likely to be.
