Cholesterol is a crystalline substance made up of fats. Naturally, it is found all throughout the body- in the liver, brain, blood and bile. Produced mainly in the liver, cholesterol is needed for the body to function properly. As it travels through the body, the cells take what they need and leave the excess in the bloodstream. It is this excess cholesterol that can ‘stick to the arteries as plaque and lead to various forms of heart disease.

Researchers have discovered two different types of cholesterol- low density lipoproteins (LDL or bad cholesterol) and high density lipoproteins (HDL or good cholesterol). Our bodies can’t use LDL cholesterol because it is obtained through animal products and our cells usually reject it. Therefore, LDL cholesterol usually ends up as plaque that clogs our artery walls, while the body produces its own serum cholesterol which it can utilize. HDL cholesterol, however, actually helps remove excess cholesterol from tissues and the bloodstream.
