HGH: Human Growth Hormone, HgH, News

Gh deficiency leads to many types of shortness and poor growth performance in children as well as adults. Hgh therapy is used to treat and improve growth conditions. FDA has approved Hgh therapy for five specified types of short stature. Let us discuss them:

Turner syndrome or Ullrich-Turner syndrome is a chromosomal disease which epitomizes the response of non-deficient shortness. Although, Gh therapy cannot treat this, replacement of Growth hormones, either alone or with a low dose of androgen increases and accelerates growth. With a high dose of Gh, along with several years of treatment, the median gain in adult height is about 2-3 inches. The treatment has been found effective in toddlers with Turner syndrome, as well as in older girls.

Chronic renal or kidney disease is a progressive loss of renal function over a period of months or years. Chronic renal failure results in many problems, including growth failure. Hgh therapy can, only to a very limited extent, prevent further loss of height in the patients. However, this therapy has to be taken for several years both before and after transplantation

Prader-Willi syndrome is a very rare genetic disorder, in which seven genes on chromosome 15 are missing or unexpressed on the paternal chromosome. Though this disease has no complete cure, symptoms can be lessened with Gh replacement therapy. Many of the children having partial deficiency can use Hgh therapy for adipose reduction and muscle strength benefits, improved body composition and increase in linear height.

Some children are small for their gestational age at birth. They have usually been the subject of intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), formerly known as intrauterine growth retardation. If these children have a slow and comparatively low growth even after 2-3 years of age, they should undergo Hgh therapy to accelerate growth. However, though high dose GH treatment has been shown to accelerate growth, but data on long term benefits and risks is limited.

Idiopathic short stature (ISS) is a case of extreme short stature the reason for which cannot be identified. High doses of Hgh has been used effectively for the increase in height of such children although not without controversies. But again, approval for this extreme degree of shortness led to an increase in the number of parents seeking treatment to make otherwise healthy children a little taller.

Besides all the above cases, Growth Hormone Treatment is also used off-label to treat a variety of other causes of shortness.
