The healthy diet can often refuse to let inches budge. While on a stable diet of salad sandwiches with lots of fluids, could still be ingesting a lot of things that do not help the cause at all.

For example, look at what you’re drinking. Having salad with a coke on the side, that coke is undoing all the good effects of the greens and veggies. This will supply with empty calories that drain the body of water and micronutrients in order to get metabolized. It causes an instant kick in the short term, water retention and fatty deposits in the long term. This also applies to several sugar-rich, caffeinated health and energy drinks like Gatorade, Red Bull, tea and coffee. The “food color” used in these is often derived from coal tar – carcinogens, anyone? What really takes the cake is dairy. It’s full of animal fats, sugar, and even – hold your breath – cow pus. Brilliant, isn’t it? Swap the glass of chilled milk for almond milk, soy milk or rice milk next time.

Secondly, what have you been topping the food with? Ketchup, mayonnaise, white vinegar, salad dressing, gravy… all these are high in fats, sugar, salt or all of these. While it already read about the evils of sugar and fats, excessive salt intake will result in water retention and a spiked blood pressure. Next time, junk the commercial gravies and salad dressings for homemade alternatives like olive oil, apple cider vinegar or salsa.

Thirdly, what goes into packaged food? Read labels carefully. Additives like High Fructose Corn Syrup, MSG and other glutamates, food color and “nature identical flavor” also make your food less than desirable for your body. So take care to choose food products that are as unprocessed as possible – fresh organic fruit, milk (if you still want any) and vegetables, brown rice, whole grains and fresh juices. For a quick fix, opt for a huge salad and brown bread with olive oil at home rather than a Subway or McDonald’s.

The key to losing weight is not in giving up everything that is liked to eat. Eat foods that are quickly and easily metabolized, or which accelerate your metabolism. Opt for healthier versions of things you like to eat, such as pizza or burgers. Soon, there will be arrive at a balance which lets  losing weight and eat that you like at the same time.
