If you are a cardiac or a diabetic patient, mirthful laughter may just be the medicine prescribed to you by your doctor.

Medical researcher Lee Berk, a preventive care specialist, and his colleagues have discovered that the “mirthful laughter” had surprising and significant effects as two hormones – beta-endorphins (the family of chemicals that elevates mood) and human growth hormone (HGH: which helps with optimizing immunity) – increased by 27 percent and 87 percent, respectively, in subjects who anticipated watching a humorous video.

In another study, researchers found that the same anticipation of mirthful laughter reduced the levels of three detrimental stress hormones.

Lee paired with Stanley Tan, endocrinologist and diabetes specialist, also exmained the effects of “mirthful laughter” on individuals with diabetes. They found that mirthful laughter, as a preventive adjunct therapy in diabetes care, raised good cholesterol and lowered inflammation, said a Loma Linda release.

The researchers will present their findings at the 122nd Annual Meeting of the American Physiological Society April 18-22.

Norman Cousins wrote about it in 1979, publishing Anatomy of an Illness: A Patient’s Perspective, after Cousin’s illness from an autoimmune disease went into remission after his doctor approved laughter as part of his treatment. Cousins believed laughter could benefit health, so he followed a steady regimen that included watching funny videos. At the time, the benefits of laughter had only been suggested.

Since then, scientists have discovered that laughter releases mood-elevating hormones (beta-endorphins)), and boosts immunity by releasing human growth hormone (HGH).
