HGH, like every hormone in the body, is under the influence of an internal control system, which exerts its influence via what is called a ‘negative feedback loop’. This loop works just like the working of a thermostat.

The secretion of HGH from the pituitary is ultimately under the control of specialized hormones produced by the hypothalamus, another gland hosted deep within the brain. The hypothalamus is like the master thermostat of the body as it is always sensing the changing shifts in hormones throughout the body. The hypothalamus produces two distinct hormones to help in the overall regulation of HGH levels in the body. One of these is the Growth Hormone Releasing Hormone or GHRH. This will stimulate the somatotropic cells of the anterior pituitary to synthesize and secrete HGH. The other is called Growth Hormone Inhibitory Hormone or GHIH or Soamtostatin. This causes the somatotropic cells to shut down the synthesis of HGH, thus dropping the levels of HGH released into general circulation.

The hypothalamus constantly monitors the levels of IGF-1 in the body. As the levels reach physiological level it will release somatostatin and the synthesis of HGH decreases. As the levels of IGF-1 drop below the physiological norm, GHRH is releases and the pituitary synthesizes and releases HGH. This is a somewhat simplified version as external functions such as sleep, stress, exercise, blood sugar levels, etc. also influence the synthesis and release of HGH.
