  • Role of chromium in anti-aging

Chromium is an essential trace mineral that helps the body to make glucose available for energy and to maintain normal blood sugar levels. It is also important for the metabolism of amino acids and fats.

It is obtained from brewer’s yeast, blackstrap molasses, black pepper, meat (especially liver), whole wheat bread and cereals, broccoli, cheese, nuts, legumes, beets, and mushrooms.

Chromium has shown to improve glucose sensitivity in people with type 1 diabetes, type 11 diabetes, gestational diabetes, steroid induced diabetes, and glucose intolerance, which is often seen as a precursor to type II diabetes. In addition to type II diabetes mellitus, chromium supplementation is also useful to direct overall weight decrements specifically toward fat loss with the retention of lean body mass and to ameliorate many manifestations of aging. Chromium may also lower total cholesterol, LDL or ‘bad’ cholesterol and triglyceride levels- all of which are risk factors for heart disease. Reports suggest that people with higher blood levels of chromium are at lower risk of developing heart disease.

Chromium deficiency can cause a diabetic-like state, impaired growth, elevated blood lipids, increased aortic plaque formation, and decreased fertility and longevity. People aged fifty-five and over and those who exercise regularly are at risk of deficiency and therefore may benefit from taking supplementary chromium.
