The aloevera plant is native to North America but has been used all over the world throughout ages for its various medicinal properties.

The gel of the aloe leaf contains several chemicals, a polysaccharide, enzymes, nutrients, and other compounds that seem to fight bacteria and fungi, reduce inflammation and encourage wound healing. Furthermore, aloeride and acemannan, two isolated compounds in the gel of the aloe leaf, have been shown to stimulate the immune system and improve skin-healing time. A number of studies suggest that Aloe Vera may be of use in the treatment of diabetes. Researchers have found that oral administration of aloevera gel extract decreased the levels of blood glucose, glycosylated hemoglobin and increased haemoglobin. Bolkent et al. (Indian J Exp Biol. 2004;42:48-52.) found evidence to suggest that Aloe leaf gel and pulp extracts has a protective effect on kidney damage caused by type II diabetes, thus suggesting that it may be useful in preventing, or ameliorating, some of the complications of diabetes.

Aloe juice products for oral administration are generally considered sage, although drinking more than a pint a day many lead to diarrhea. Because of its laxative properties, the latex form of aloe should not be used by elderly people, children, pregnant or breast feeding women, and anyone with inflammatory intestinal diseases, such as Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, or appendicitis.
