As a derivative of milk production, the types of amino acids in whey proteins are closely related to the amino acids required by the human body. Whey proteins contain about 2.5 percent cysteine, a sulfur amino acid known to increase the cellular level of glutathione, a potent antioxidant. Glutathione plays an important role in the regulation of immune cells and may possess antiviral properties. Whey also contains the protein lactoferrin, which is known to boost immune system and modulate the migration, maturation and function of immune cells.
The proteins found in whey are widely recognized for their high biological value. In as much protein is intimately involved in anabolism, whey protein may be the best candidate for maximizing muscle growth. Again, of the various forms available, (concentrate, peptides, hydrolysate, etc.) whey protein isolate is considered superior by many because of its purity, high glutathione content and increased bioavailability.
However, people should obtain enough protein from their diet and should not need to take supplementary whey protein. Only people who have undergone recent trauma, surgery, and those who participate in strenuous exercise can benefit from taking upto 25 grams of whey protein per day.
Whey may be contraindicated if you have milk allergies. Long term excessive intake of whey protein, as with other proteins, is not recommended as it may be associated with deteriorating kidney function and possible osteoporosis.
